The schedule asks for the Aadhaar number if you have one. The notified question does not ask you to hand over the card or a copy. If you do not have Aadhaar, tell the enumerator it is not available.

No. For the first time since 1931, caste is being enumerated in the census, but the enumerator records the caste in an open column as you declare it. No certificate has to be shown.

Under Section 8(2) of the Census Act, 1948, a respondent must answer notified questions to the best of their knowledge or belief. If you do not hold a document, saying “not available” is a correct answer.

Census 2027 has two phases. Phase 1 (Houselisting and Housing Census) ran from 1 April to 30 September 2026 and is over. Phase 2 (Population Enumeration) is the phase that asks about people, and its dates differ by state.

The Registrar General notified 40 questions for Population Enumeration, against 29 in Census 2011. Based on media reports of the notification, they fall into these groups:

Census 2027 Self-Enumeration: How to Do It Online, Step by Stepजनगणना 2027 सेल्फ एनुमरेशन ऑनलाइन कैसे करें: चरण-दर-चरण
Self-enumeration is optional. Households that skip it are visited by an enumerator, who records the same details. It can be done in English and 15 Indian languages and needs an internet connection. Only normal households can use it, not houseless people. The screens below are an illustration, so the real portal may look different.

Census 2027 Fraud Alert: How to Stay Safeजनगणना 2027 के नाम पर ठगी से बचाव
Government advisories have warned people not to share Aadhaar or bank details with anyone who only claims to be census staff, because fraudsters copy the census. The census never needs your OTP (other than the login OTP on the official portal), card PIN, CVV, net-banking password or any payment. Check the enumerator’s identity card and never click on census links sent on WhatsApp or SMS.
