At a press meet in Kolkata on 17 August 2026, the Director of Census Operations said more than 53 lakh households in West Bengal had completed self-enumeration. This was the highest in the country and nearly one-fourth of the state’s estimated households. From 16 August, enumerators visited homes with the Census 2027 HLO mobile app. Nearly two lakh enumerators were engaged in the state, and the Director said all households would be covered by 14 September. Every household is visited, even if it self-enumerated. Houselisting asks about the house, not about each person: the building material, rooms, ownership, drinking water, electricity, toilet, kitchen and fuel, things like TV, internet, smartphone and vehicles, the main cereal eaten, and a mobile number. Self-enumeration means you fill your own household form online before the enumerator visits. It takes about 10–20 minutes and costs nothing.
